Medical Treatment for Dog Bites

If you or a family member has been bitten by a dog, seek medical attention immediately.

Rabies

Rabies is a disease that is transmitted through saliva of an infected animal and usually occurs through a bite by the infected animal. Before 1960, most reported cases of rabies in the United States occurred in domesticated animals. As a result of prevention and education, now over ninety percent of cases occur in wildlife.

The first symptoms of rabies are similar to those experienced for the flu - fever, weakness, and/or headache. After clinical signs occur, it is rare for a person to survive. In fact, as of this writing, there have been less than ten documented cases of rabies survival.

After being bitten by a dog, your doctor will likely recommend rabies vaccinations. The dose and type of rabies treatment varies depending on whether you have previously received rabies vaccinations.

Infection

In addition to rabies and significant physical injury which a dog bite can cause, infection can occur. Most physicians will recommend a tetanus shot if you have not had one in the prior ten years. It is also important to use proper wound care. Never wait to seek medical treatment for a dog bite, no matter how minor a wound might appear to be. Infection can alone cause serious health care problems.
