An Elderly Woman in Fountain, Florida, is Killed by a Family Pit Bull

Seventy-six-year-old Alicia Malagon was helping to care for her daughter and son-in-law’s dog in Fountain, Florida, when she was fatally attacked by the pit bull she was temporarily caring for. On August 26, 2017, Malagon went to the family members’ home in the role as dog-sitter. She brought her small dachshund along with her. Once they got inside the home, the pit bull attacked the dachshund. When Malagon tried to intervene, the pit bull turned his attentions on her. She was viciously attacked and managed to make her way to a phone and call her son-in-law. Another family member went to the home and found her on the kitchen floor, barely conscious. Malagon was quickly transported to Calhoun-Liberty Hospital and pronounced dead soon thereafter.

Reportedly, when Malagon contacted her son-in-law, she said that she had been attacked but would be fine. He sent his brother to check on her, and he had to break down the door to get in.

According to records kept on FatalPitBullAttacks.com, Malagon is the 15th person in 2017 to be killed by a pit bull. This is the deadliest dog breed. Research indicates year after year that pit bulls cause the most fatal dog attacks in the U.S., causing more than all other breeds combined. Various cities and communities have banned pit bulls, but it is a difficult feat to achieve. In spite of the clear record of deadly violence, pit bull advocates band together and have proven to have a lot of influence over local proceedings at city council meetings, wherever pit bull bans are proposed.

An Infant Becomes the Fourth in the U.S. to Die from a Pit Bull Attack Since April 6, 2017

Six-month-old Kamiko Dao Tsuda-Saelee of Las Vegas, Nevada, was killed by the family pit bull on May 8, 2017. She was the fourth person in the U.S. to be killed by a pit bull since last month on April 6. The baby had been in her home in a baby walker near the pit bull when the dog attacked her. The baby’s mother had gone into another room. The dog was biting the baby’s head when the mom returned. Although she was able to quickly stop the attack, the damage was already too much. The infant was pronounced dead shortly after being transported to a nearby hospital. According to the coroner, the cause of death was multiple blunt force head injuries. The family had owned the dog for nine years, and he had no history of biting. Shortly after the fatal pit bull attack, Clark County Animal Control euthanized the dog.

On April 27, there was another fatal pit bull attack. Again, a family dog was responsible for the death. Thirty-two-year-old Lisa Green of Breinigsville, Pennsylvania was brutally mauled to death on a deck of her home as neighbors watched in horror and tried to save her. She had owned the dog for approximately 2 ½ years.

A couple of days prior to Green’s death, 60-year-old Maurice Brown was killed by a pit bull in Dayton, Ohio. The dog broke the chain that had restrained him, and he attacked Brown as he was walking in an alley. Brown was heard screaming for help. Officers were called to the scene, where they discovered the dog still actively attacking Brown. The pit bull was shot and killed by police. Brown was quickly transported to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Eighty-two-year-old Cecille Short was walking in a residential neighborhood with her dog when two pit bulls savagely attacked and killed her and her pet. Various members of the neighborhood had issued warnings about the dogs. The dogs’ owner, a 31-year-old man, has been charged with second-degree manslaughter in Short’s death.

Seven people have been killed by pit bulls in the U.S. this year. The breed has been responsible for the clear majority of dog attack fatalities year after year. In 2015, pit bulls were responsible for 82% of the dog-related deaths, killing a total of 28 people. The breed is obviously different than any other and should be banned, for the safety of all members of society, including pit bull owners who overlook these deadly statistics.

A Toddler Suffers a Horrific Facial Attack by a Pit Bull Mix

Wednesday, March 22nd, 2017

On March 15, 2017, in Clinton, Iowa,15-month-old Lucas Harrison was playing with a friend’s pit bull mix that had been adopted from a shelter just two hours before. The pit bull suddenly lunged at the toddler and bit off much of his face. In hundreds of similar pit bull attacks, the dog continues biting and attacking. Based on reports, this one devastating bite was the only one, but the damage done is horrific.

Lucas was transported by medical helicopter to the University of Iowa Childrens’ Hospital. At least three surgeons were involved in an initial 6-hour surgery to re-attach the face. As a result of the pit bull attack, a significant portion of the child’s gum, jaw bone, and permanent teeth were ripped out and most of the cartilage in his nose was destroyed. Doctors say the damage will affect him throughout his lifetime. He won’t have upper front teeth. Doctors hope that dental reconstruction can eventually be done to support false teeth when he is an adult. In the future, Lucas will need further facial surgeries.

The damage done to the toddler’s face is extensive, and the pain associated with his injuries is beyond imagination. The child is receiving care that involves keeping him sedated, to help shield him from the pain.

This tragic incident brings to light the dangers of transporting shelter dogs across state lines. This pit bull mix had been on death row in a Louisiana facility. The dog became a rescue transport, which is a type of operation in which volunteers rescue dogs from various shelters around the country and then move them to other shelters that will accept them.

The dog was advertised as a great dog with a great temperament and was ultimately adopted out on the day of the attack by the Clinton Humane Society.

Graphic images of Lucas are widely posted on the web, and they demonstrate the danger of pit bulls and pit bull mixes. When one of these dogs suddenly and without warning attack and seriously injure or kill someone, invariably, “no one saw it coming.”  This is in spite of the fact that a person in the U.S. is killed by a pit bull or pit bull mix approximately every two weeks, on average, over the past 5 years or so.

A 76-year-old Man and His Pet are Killed by Two Pit Bulls

Valentine Herrera was savagely attacked by two pit bulls on February 2, 2017, and he died from the injuries on February 28. The fatal pit bull attack occurred in Los Angeles, California, as the victim was taking his dog, a Pomeranian, for a walk at about 6 p.m. The two pit bulls ran upon them and first attacked the man’s pet, reportedly tearing and shredding the small dog. As Herrera tried to intervene, the pit bulls turned on him. They knocked him to the ground and tore into him relentlessly, according to witnesses. After being rushed to a nearby hospital, he underwent brain surgery and received other treatment for his injuries.

Neighbors reported that the same two pit bulls killed another neighbor’s dog four days before the attack on Herrera. Stephanie Grezelle said she and her children witnessed the pit bulls mauling their pet to death. She rushed their pet to a veterinarian, but the damage was too extensive and the dog died.

There is no report yet on the fate of the dogs or on whether or not the dogs’ owner could face charges related to the fatality.

This was the second fatal pit bull attack this year. The first victim was 6-year-old Logan Braatz of Fulton County, GA. The child was walking to a school bus stop in the midst of a group of children when the two dogs attacked him and a 5-year-old girl, Syrai Sanders. Although Syrai survived, her entire scalp was removed from her skull during the attack. She faces multiple plastic surgeries. The dog owner in this case was arrested and has been charged with two counts of misdemeanor reckless conduct.

A look at fatal pit bull attacks in recent years provides convincing proof that pit bulls are too dangerous to exist in society without strict regulations that hold owners strictly to account, in the event someone is injured or killed.

Graphic Video Shows an 8-year-old Girl Mauled by a Pit Bull

Monday, May 23rd, 2016

Daddy (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

Last Wednesday 8-year-old Gabby Jones was walking to school when a neighborhood pit bull viciously mauled her. A security camera captured the disturbing pit bull attack on video. The dog approached Gabby on the sidewalk from behind, and she said she thought the dog would continue walking by. Instead, the dog jumped on her, dragged her down by her hands, bit her face, and tore an ear and one of her legs. Fortunately, rescuers immediately rushed to her aid. Reportedly, there were more people standing nearby videoing the attack with their phones. Only two of the witnesses helped. Gabby had to get stitches and will require surgery, according to her mother.

This savage attack occurred in San Bernardino, California. Pit bulls are exhibiting the same type of deadly behavior in Texas and across the country. Advocates of the breed are passionate in their refusal to acknowledge that the dogs are too dangerous to exist in society without stricter guidelines and penalties against owners, in the event someone is harmed. Banning pit bulls would be the best way to protect society because the “irresponsible owners” blamed for the fatalities that occur approximately every 14 days in the U.S. are apparently everywhere.

Pit bull advocates claim that the media is biased against the breed. A look at the known fatalities caused by pit bulls tells a different story. This year nine people have been killed by pit bulls, and the total number of fatalities caused by dogs so far in 2016 is 11. Because this statistic is similar to recent years, it’s obvious that pit bulls are different from all other breeds combined. It’s time to create new laws that will protect the public from pit bulls.

A Three-Day-Old Infant is Killed by a Family Dog – Part 4

GSD with baby

GSD with baby (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

A tragic dog bite fatality occurred on Sunday, February 7, 2016, that took the life of 3-day-old Aiden Grim-Morelli of Youngstown, Ohio. The newborn’s 21-year-old mother described what happened. She was sleeping on the couch, and the baby was in a laundry basket on the floor. Incidentally, the four dogs in the home sleep in laundry baskets, as well. The mother said the makeshift crib was being used because she had been promised a genuine baby crib and was waiting for it. The mom was awakened when the baby began crying. She saw that her son’s head was covered in blood. She wiped off the blood and could see that a dog had bitten the baby. She called 9-1-1, but Aiden died before paramedics arrived. The only injuries that were apparent were a few small puncture wounds on the skull. Forensic pathologist Dr. Joseph Ohr of the Mahoning County Coroner’s Office said that an infant’s skull is extremely fragile at three days old, and the dog’s jaw easily penetrated the skull, which caused brain injury and ultimately death.

The following are basic dog safety tips for when your baby arrives in your home:

  • The baby should never be left alone with the dog, not for a moment. The sounds and movements of a baby can cause a dog agitation, and they have been known to try to carry a baby in their mouths to the mother, much like dogs carry their puppies. Sometimes dogs attack a baby because of the prey instinct.
  • Whether you get a phone call or need to go in another room to prepare a bottle, be aware of where the baby is and where the dog is. It takes only a second of a dog being alone with a baby for a possible tragedy to occur.
  • When the dog is around, do not put the baby on the floor.

Attorney for West Texas Dog Bite – Most Dangerous Dog Breed: Pit Bulls – Part 15

Research has been done on dog attacks and dog bites, and information has been used to determine what the most dangerous dogs are in the U.S. As with just about any report with figures, there are many different variables that determine which dogs rank at the top of the danger list. There is one breed that always makes lists of dangerous dogs because they cause the most harm, including the most fatalities, and that breed is the pit bull.

The owner of the pit bull that escaped its yard and relentlessly attacked 10-year-old Joel Guerrero in his own backyard told news sources that his dog is not dangerous and that this was the first time it ever attacked anyone. The owner has not been cited by police or animal control services. The victim’s mother said she’s worried that somebody else could be harmed because there is no protection being provided. She is unlike many pit bull advocates, who frequently put advocating for pit bulls ahead of the safety of their own family members. Guerrero’s mother said she is first a mother and her son’s health is her first priority.

When WebMD published an article that was soft on pit bulls, it included a segment called “Considering a Pit Bull?” Owners are urged to socialize their pit bulls, monitor their playtime, keep them on leashes if they are unfriendly with other dogs, and slowly introduce them to animals such as cats and bunnies. Spaying and neutering is also recommended, and that actually does help to reduce dominance aggression among males. But if a pit bull owner is not going to be held accountable for his dog going into a child’s backyard and attacking brutally, what can these types of measures accomplish?

Dallas Attorney – Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s Dog Bites 2 People, Providing a Holiday Safety Reminder – Part 2

Wednesday, December 16th, 2015

In world news last week, it was widely reported that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s dog bit two visitors. He adopted the large 10-year-old mixed breed in the summer and expressed no regrets. No one was seriously injured when the dog bit two people at a Hanukkah celebration last Wednesday.

Being careful about avoiding dog bites is always a good consideration, especially for parents with children. Anytime a family is visiting a home with dogs, it is reasonable to first find out whether there will be a dog at the place to be visited. If there is a dog, find out what kind of dog it is. If the dog is a pit bull or another potentially dangerous animal, like a Rottweiler, it could be a life-saving matter to ask that the dog be restrained somewhere and not accessible to children during the visit.

Especially during the holidays, when any dog can become agitated enough to bite, being cautious with regards to dogs is really an excellent safety step. The following is good advice for parents to give their children, to avoid being bitten by a dog:

  • Never touch a dog while he is eating. Dogs can be very possessive of food and tend to instinctively bite if they perceive that someone may be trying to take some of their food.
  • Never touch a dog that is sleeping. When dogs become startled from sleep, they may feel threatened and attack on impulse.
  • Before petting any dog, first ask the dog’s owner if it’s okay. Even then, children should probably not pet a dog if their parent or guardian isn’t present.

A close look at the 20 fatal pit bull attacks that have occurred in the U.S. in 2015 as of late October shows disturbing patterns that are not common among other breeds. The attacks are relentless, all seemingly unprovoked, and often perpetrated against the owners of the pit bulls. These facts make a strong argument that pit bulls are too dangerous and should be banned. At the very least, because of the clear pattern of risk, they should not be allowed in homes with children. People of every age are victims, however. The following list of 2015 fatalities is and will be continued in this series.

Thirty-six-year-old De’Trick Johnson was savagely attacked by a pack of seven pit bulls on March 21, 2015, in Jefferson County, Arkansas. When he exited his automobile at a service station, the pit bulls escaped the fence through a gate and relentlessly attacked him. Family members had reportedly told the dogs’ owner to get rid of the dogs before someone got hurt. Authorities charged the owner with felony manslaughter in connection with Johnson’s death.

Kenneth Ford, age 79, of Pahrump, Nevada, was killed by three pit bulls belonging to a tenant of his. Ford was feeding a neighbor’s cats when the dogs jumped a fence and attacked him. Two men ran to his aid; but, even after shooting two of the dogs, they were unable to stop the relentless attack, which occurred on March 13. Authorities finally helped stop the dogs. The owner of the pit bulls was arrested and charged in connection with the attack. Ford died on April 14 from the injuries caused in the dog attack.

Read more in Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4, and Part 5. In this ongoing series, learn about more of the fatal pit bull attacks that have occurred this year. Circumstances surrounded each incident suggest that pit bulls are too dangerous for people of all ages.

Two pit bull mixes that were family dogs viciously attacked and killed 7-year-old Malaki Mildward of College Springs, Iowa, on January 22, 2015. Malaki was under the care of his stepfather, who was inside the home, while he was outside with two of the family’s four pit bull mixes. No one witnessed the fatal pit bull attack. The child’s mother discovered his body in the yard when she returned home. The family dogs responsible were euthanized.

Sixty-three-year-old Frederick Crutchfield was killed outside his home by his stepson’s three pit bulls. The victim was well-acquainted with the dogs. There were no witnesses to the fatal attack, but an autopsy verified that he died from blood loss caused by canine injuries. Investigators were able to confirm that the three family dogs were responsible for the fatal attack.
