In sad news this week, a dog, since named Pappy, was found with a jar on his head and evidence that it was intentionally placed there, preventing him from defending himself, eating, or drinking.  There was a hole in one of Pappy’s paws that was so bad, part of his paw had to be removed.  The exhausted stray also suffered from cuts and bites all over his body.  All of these conditions are signs that Pappy was used as a bait dog for a dog fighting ring.

Dog fighting is a cruel blood sport that is more prevalent than most people realize.  The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) has estimated that 40,000+ people in the United States are involved in organized dog fighting. Add thousands more to that total when you also consider the number associated with street dog fighting, which is more of an impromptu event.

The general public in America has no tolerance for dog fighting and the cruelty involved with the sport.  With signs that dog fighting is alive and well in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, it’s a good time for the public to know what signs to watch for as evidence that someone in the community may be involved with the illegal activity.

Read our continuing series to learn specific signs of dog fighting activity so that, if you spot suspicious activity, you can report the information to Crime Stoppers.
