Four-Year-Old Killed by Pit Bull

Thursday, March 29th, 2012

A child’s curiosity can be a wonderful thing. However, sometimes it can lead to tragedy. A parent’s worst nightmare was realized late Sunday night when a small boy wandered from his house, only to be found later dead from a mauling by a pit bull.

The incident began as the boy played in his family’s front yard while his father washed the car. A few moments of inattention to the boy’s activities left the father searching for the boy. Soon a search party was organized, consisting of neighbors and other volunteers from the rural community of Victoria. They continued their efforts throughout the night, but to no avail.

Another search began Monday morning with the assistance of trained dogs. However, it was only when a neighbor living half a mile away entered his own backyard that the sad fate of the boy was discovered. The neighbor discovered the body lifeless and bloody, mauled to death by a pit bull he owns.

Members of the rescue team were devastated upon learning the news. However, the owner of the pit bull was particularly distraught. He owns ten pit bulls, but the dog in question was chained and kept behind a fence.

It does not appear that the owner of the pit bull was negligent. However, this is no consolation for the parents who lost their boy that night. Sadly, the child had been found wandering the neighboring fields before. The child’s curiosity, it seems, this time cost him his life.

When an owner does not secure his animal behind a fence or keep him leashed, there are often grounds for a lawsuit. In such a case a victim may seek compensation for medical costs, loss of income, pain, and suffering. When a child dies in a dog attack due to negligence, parents may file a wrongful death claim.
