A 43-year-old Man is Killed by a Pit Bull in a Savage AttackMonday, June 6th, 2016
A horrific pit bull attack with shocking details occurred on Saturday afternoon in Stockton, California. Earl Stephens, Jr., age 43, was with his wife visiting with a friend, who is breeding pit bulls. An adult pit bull was sitting on Stephens’ lap, and the owner told his pet to get down. As a result of the command, the dog “went crazy” and began viciously attacking Stephens. Both the wife and owner tried to help as the victim was bitten repeatedly. At one point the dog turned on the owner and injured him before again biting Stephens. From reports, two pit bull puppies were also involved in the attack. Police were called, and the adult pit bull was in the yard behaving aggressively when they arrived. The officers shot the pit bull in order to get to the victim. Stephens was quickly transported to a local hospital, where he died from his injuries.
It is common for pit bulls to go for the neck and throat. Victims often end up dying from a variety of wounds, such as a severed jugular, severed carotid artery, crushing injuries to the cervical spine, and crushing injuries to the spinal cord.
Less than one-half mile from where Stephens was killed, a 38-year-old woman, Claudia Gallardo, was fatally attacked by a pit bull in 2013. The scenario was similar. Gallardo was also at a friend’s home when the fatal pit bull attack occurred. The owner of that pit bull was charged with involuntary manslaughter and found guilty for keeping a dangerous animal that killed a person. It was the first time a prosecutor in San Joaquin County had ever charged anyone in connection with a fatal dog mauling.
