Two People in the U.S. are Killed by Pit Bulls since December 7, 2015Monday, December 14th, 2015
In separate horrific incidents, two people in the United States have died as a result of a pit bull or pit bull mix attack in the past week. Both fatal pit bull attacks strongly support the argument that pit bulls are too dangerous to have in society. The first of the two victims was 4-year-old Xavier Strickland of Detroit, Michigan. The other victim was 22-year-old Rebecca Hardy of Port Huron, which is also in Michigan.
Preschooler Xavier was walking with his mother on a residential sidewalk and was on the way to his school when four pit bulls escaped their yard and attacked him. The four dogs yanked the child from his mother’s protective arms and dragged him underneath the gate. The mother was severely injured in trying to protect her son from the dogs. Police officers killed three of the pit bulls when they arrived at the scene. The fourth dog responsible for the death was later euthanized. The investigation revealed that the dogs had a known history of escaping the owner’s yard.
Xavier’s death resulted in an outcry about dogfighting, stray pit bulls, and backyard breeding of pit bulls that are all too common in Detroit.
The 41-year-old owner of the pit bulls has been charged by the Prosecutor’s Office in Wayne County with second-degree murder, manslaughter, and possessing dangerous animals causing death.
