On November 15, 2015, in New York, a family pit bull mix attacked the baby of the family, an 11-month-old boy. According to the child’s mother, she was in the living room with her four children at the time the sudden attack occurred. Besides the baby, she has daughters ages 7, 10, and 12. The mom turned her back for a moment and then heard the baby screaming. The dog bit the child in the face and neck. All of the children witnessed the horrific attack. The mother had difficulty getting the dog to let go. Finally, the child was released. He was transported by ambulance to Utica’s St. Elizabeth Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. He died from the bite wounds to his face and neck.

Just last week in Detroit, 4-year-old Xavier Strickland was brutally killed by four pit bulls. According to authorities, the owner of the dogs has been charged with second-degree murder, possessing dangerous animals causing death, and manslaughter. The pit bulls attacked Xavier as he was on his way to school. The dogs dragged the boy away from his mother, pulling him behind a fence. The death was ruled an accident by the Wayne County Medical Examiner’s Office. When Prosecutor Kym Worthy of Wayne County made the announcement about various criminal charges brought against the dogs’ owner, he said that the evidence will show that the dogs saw the pre-schooler as a meal. He also stated that to say the owner in this harrowing case was irresponsible would be a gross understatement. The man is being held without bond in the county jail.

This recent fatal pit bull attack alone should be enough to go on, when determining whether pit bulls are too dangerous to be part of society.
